Let’s Break

The Ice

I’m Melissa McGuire (she/her), a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (Supervised by Kimberly Watts Hoggatt, JD, MA, LPC-S, LMHC TX Lic. #66799) and Wild Peace Therapy is my therapy practice where I see clients in person in Dallas and virtually throughout Texas.

Some things about me: I think being a mom is great and also really fucking exhausting. I’m a late diagnosed neurospicy weird girl who redesigned my life in my 40s after a life defined by my surroundings and circumstances (conservative purity culture and heteronormative patriarchy to name a couple.)

If you’re interested in knowing specifics about other aspects of my identity or lived experience, please feel free to ask. I believe that therapy is inherently political and if it is important to your safety or mental health, I’m happy to share my political views with you.

At my core, I'm a laidback, easygoing peacemaker but that is balanced by strength of conviction, organizational skills, and clear vision - especially in situations related to my moral ideals.

I try to create harmony, but never at the cost of what I believe.

Why I’m Here

I was raised in purity culture, married young, and spent most of my adult years crammed into a small box by all The Shoulds that surrounded me. Political events eventually shattered the veil of obedience and obligation I wore, and I began to emerge into the Weird Girl & Grownass Lady that I am today.

Along the way, three wise women (each a mental health professional herself) helped me learn about myself, grow as a person, and eventually, I built the confidence to completely change my life. Part of that change was going back to school to become a therapist to help people who are going through the same things I did.

I believe there are many people who are pushed into supporting roles in their own stories. I created Wild Peace Therapy with the intention of serving those folks who are ready to meet their true selves and level up into a life that they love.

What Therapy with Me Is Like

I’m more of a Take Your Shoes Off-Cussing in Session Therapist than an Assigning Homework-Structured Approach kind of therapist. Neither is better or worse – what’s important is what resonates with you.

Let me be clear that what happens in therapy is all about YOU, the therapy client, and at the same time, I’ll be showing up as the Real Me so that we can build a good, strong therapeutic relationship.

The clients I work best with tend to be tired of the way life currently feels and are ready to figure out how to make changes. They understand that progress can be challenging but they’re committed to the emotional work necessary (with support) in honor of reaching their ideal life or self. They want a therapist they can feel comfortable laughing and crying with - whom they also trust to be honest with them in a no-bullshit kind of way.

What I’m Into

You may not care AT ALL what books I like to read or what I do in my spare time. Totally valid. On the other hand, some people feel good knowing if I have similar interests to them - either because they feel less likely to be judged or they like knowing there’s something built-in to talk about.

Feel free to ignore or read on depending on what feels right to you.

You’ll find me buried under my TBR list.

My primary hobby is reading, especially Romance. I’m obsessed with the genre and will extoll the virtues of smut throughout all the land! Ask me about my favorite tropes or authors, just don’t ask me to recap the last book I read because I guarantee I’ve already forgotten the characters’ damn names.

Other things I love:

Organizing things and creating systems makes me happy and serves the necessary purpose of supporting my brain. I love seeing live music of all kinds and definitely want to see or hear about your tattoo(s). I’ve been learning about Tarot for the last couple of years and it’s helped me relearn to trust my intuition.

Things I hate:

  • Sock wrinkles

  • Getting less than 10 hours of sleep

  • Raw bell peppers

  • Unpacking after a trip

  • Plots that rely on a Big Misunderstanding
